For more than 150 years the coast of Gloucester has long been a favorite area, for local artists. Some of the more famous of which are Fitz Henry Lane, Emile Gruppe, Childe Hassam, and Maurice Prendergast. Just to name a few. Many were part of the Rocky Neck Art Colony. Their paintings can be found in collections all over the world.
Marine painter, Frank Knox Morton Rehn painted scenes along the coast of Massachusetts. Including parts of Gloucester. Notably his oil painting Beach of Bass Rocks, Gloucester, Massachusetts, 1881, can be found at the Smithsonian American Art Museum.
Artists are still drawn to Gloucester and surrounding areas to paint. Rockport is home to Motif No. 1. It is a simple red fishing shack that has inspired many artists. This is one of the most painted buildings in the world.
In Newbury, along the Plum Island Turnpike is another favorite scene. Artists like to photograph and paint what is known as the Pink House. Owned by the Parker River Wildlife Refuge, this abandoned house has a mystique of its own.
